Guardian Angle shortstory

When the request of the wish landed on my desk, on top of the reports I hadn’t filled out, and the older wishes I hadn’t been able to grant, I signed. I had been a guarding angle for years, but with the rising amount of paperwork, and the stronger criteria to do practically anything, it was harder to get through a task, let alone multiple at once.

Lesley had been my protégé for three years, ever since she’d been a sick seven-year-old. She had been through a lot, and I had tried my best to help, but was always overwhelmed with the backend of my work. I had manged to save her, when she had the worst episode of her life, but after that I had spend days catching the reports and personal performance sheets up.

When I picked up the paper, with the defeat already sitting deep in my bones, I had to smile to myself. I could never grant a wish like that – or could I?

Whoever listens and saved me when I was sick, I would really like to meet you. I know it’s probably not normal for you to come to earth to meet humans, but I really want to see you, and say thank you. Please, if you can hear me, come and visit me.

She still sounded so young and sweet, and my heart tore apart as I put her request down. I had never heard of a guardian angle coming to earth to meet their protégé, and it didn’t sound like something the arch angles would ever grant. But asking could hurt, could it?

As I got up from my desk, and took the few turns I needed to get to my higher up’s office, I took a few deep breaths. They had ridiculed me before, for asking questions they deemed stupid, but for me Lesley came above anyone else. If there was the slightest chance, I would be able to grant her wish, I would.

I knocked on the door, and entered upon receiving an answer. The office was spacious, and three arch angles lounged around.

“What is it you want, younger brother?” one of them asked, with a tone that reminded me that my position was significantly lower than his.

“I received a wish from a protégé, and I wanted to ask permission to grant it, older brother” I said, my eyes resting on the dark, wooden desk in the middle of the room.

“What is this wish, that you’ve come here for, younger brother?” they asked, while nipping on their sweet juice of life.

“My protégé would like to meet me, on earth,” I said. My eyes had wondered to the floor, as I felt the redness reach my cheeks. I didn’t want them to ridicule me, again.

“It’s not normal for guardian angles to go to earth, unless it is to save their protégés, younger brother. Is this child you are fostering in mortal danger?” they asked, their lips turned downward, while their eyebrows were raised.

“She’s not in mortal danger, but I saved her once when she was. She just wants to say thank you, and see who saved her,” I explained.

“And you’re willing to risk all our lives and missions, to meet this one human girl? That’s ridiculous. What if another mortal stumbles upon your presence? That could destroy us,” they said, another sip from their sweet drink down their throat.

“I understand, thank you for your time, big brother,” I said, before leaving the room. Instead of returning to my desk, and giving up, I walked to Maria’s desk. She knew the rules better than anyone. If I wanted to find a loophole, to grant Lesley’s wish, I needed her help.
