The strange creature

It was a cold winter night; the sky was dark and full of clouds. She couldn’t help herself, and pressed her hand against the cold glass of the window. While she felt the coldness invading her soft skin, she couldn’t take it away.

Her husband had left her fourteen days ago, and there had been no sign of him since. She didn’t know if it was her fault, or if he had any plans to return to her.

When Amelia woke that very faithful day, her husband had already left, without a single note to explain himself. The staff had informed her, but couldn’t give her any more information about his disappearance, either. She was inclined to contact the police, but really what could they do? If he wanted to leave, he had every right to.

During the first few days she had hope he would return. Amelia thought he might have realized his mistake, but he never came back.

After the first week, she felt alone and also embarrassed. Was she such a bad wife, that he simply had no other chance than to leave? Was it her fault?

The thoughts in her head kept turning and caused more pain the more time passed. Nothing seemed to help, and nobody else’s company good enough.

Three of her friends had tried to visit, but she declined every time. She assumed someone from her staff had shared the news with the town, but couldn’t be sure. She didn’t want to leave her home, in case her husband returned.

After a few minutes the glass was less cold, and her hand was colder. She kept her eyes fixed on the tree line, hoping to see her husband walk out between them and into her direction.

Instead of her husband, she saw something else move. Her eyes had adjusted enough to the darkness to see, but her mind couldn’t comprehend what she saw.

It looked like a monster, a wolf or maybe a bear. Amelia wasn’t sure, but didn’t feel any fear either. She felt safe in her house and home.

The creature walked on all four, until it suddenly stood up. It looked strange and unnatural, standing only on two of its four legs. Amelia kept her eyes on the creature, fear slowly growing in her.

The creature seemed to be staring right back at Amelia, but she knew that wouldn’t be possible. How was the creature suppose to see her? She was standing in a dark house, no light in sight. Yet, she couldn’t shake the feeling it was watching her.
